You can see all of my work on The Calvert Journal here. Some of my own favorite pieces include:

The women directors who led the Soviet Union's silent era,

Tatar Baroque: one artist is transforming Russian fairytales into daring contemporary fashion, and

From Kanye to Kendrick: 10 hip-hop tracks you didn't know were used samples from Eastern Europe.

Most recently, I have written about Aktan Arym Kubat's film Beshkempir and about Paweł Pawlikowski's From Moscow to Pietushki for the Film of the Week series.

If you have ideas that might work for TCJ, you are more than welcome to send me your pitches to maria@calvert22.org.

At Calvert, I also edit and manage Curated, which is a cross-institutional database dedicated to showcasing the new generation of contemporary Russian artists. The idea of this project came to my wonderful artist friend Elena Anosova and me in 2020, and since then Curated has been updated weekly with the help of art experts from the country and beyond.
